Segway Tours ROCK!

Being a tourist is hard work! Well at least hard on the feet…lol. Boy it’s amazing what happens to the body from sitting on our butts all day for the last six months, we had a great day though!

We started out a bit earlier, caught the free shuttle from the apartment we are staying to the Metro (subway) station. Once again got on and off without incident. Today started with a segway tour of Washington D.C. We used City Segway (http://dc.citysegwaytours.com/) and would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a basic tour of Washington D.C. that covers a lot of ground! Our tour guide Sam and trainee Eileen were the greatest!! Very knowledgeable and made the tour a lot of fun! We were in a group with 4 other tourist. Two elementary teachers and a couple from Canada. When we got to the Canadian Embassy, Sam had a joke about how Canada was named….sadly they didn’t get it, but it was funny. Later on in the tour Sam was telling us what we see if we visit the Museum of American History. He mentioned that even Kermit the Frog was in there, so Grant added “but that’s none of my business” and sadly Sam had no clue what we were talking about. So we tried telling him that there is a bunch of memes with Kermit that end with that line. Well then…one of the teachers looked at us and commented that she was impressed that we even knew what a meme was! Insult of the decade! Geezzz, when did we get to the stage in life when those that are in their 30s think we were ancient and clueless! Did I mention that Sam is a college student. The segways were amazingly simple! Very easy to learn and quick to feel skilled riding! We would have loved to have one for the day! However, it was only a 3 hour tour, but we didn’t get stranded wink emoticon (you know like that ‘oldie’ Gilligan) so we had to return them.

So, now back on foot we adventure. We grabbed a bite to eat and then walked back to the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial Wall, the Korean War Memorial, down to the Potomac River and some of the Cherry Blossoms and then across the Arlington Bridge to the Arlington Cemetery. The changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier defies words. It is more about the reverent feelings and respect for what you are witnessing. Pride for the Tomb Guards!!

Back to loving the Metro…the subway was right outside the gates to the Arlington Cemetery! Ahhhh, but return of the ‘nice’ Grant showed up. So it is now rush hour…trains are packed. We skipped the first one because it was pretty full and one that we could take but would need to make a switch at the next station. So as the next one arrives we look and it is more packed! When the doors open people literally backed out to let more people out and then those that backed out walked forward and got back on. Very crowded!! When in Rome…..yes, I jumped right in, squishing like I belonged…turned around and Grant is standing on the outside telling me he won’t fit. Not happening….My back pack and another gentleman is holding the door open, while I am telling him to push in and he is telling me he won’t fit. A couple guys are saying we aren’t supposed to hold the doors, ya…I get that…then move to the middle instead of just standing there…there is room! After telling him a couple times to get in he hopped on and believe it or not…he fit. We got some looks…but they got over it, I suppose.  🙂

Loving the place we are staying for providing a free shuttle!

Back in our place, feet up…relaxing! Grant took 342 photos today, so I have my work cut out!
