Fiery Crash
Now that we know all involved will be ok, we are sharing these photos of the wreck on Westbound I-70 in Indiana a couple of days ago.
Whistle was driving, we were right near the time to switch drivers so I was awake.
Just previous to coming upon this accident we were in bumper to bumper stop and go traffic due to construction. Both the eastbound and westbound sides were down to one lane for the construction on a bridge. As we were getting near the end of the construction a big plume of smoke was noticeable in the sky. When we got close enough to identify the source of the smoke I grabbed the camera and started shooting.
We drove by the scene at about 10 mph, we could feel the heat of the fire, which was about 100 feet away. What happened according to news reports is the third truck in line did not slow for the traffic and rear ended the middle truck which then bumped the first truck. The driver from the third truck was able to get out but suffered burns and minor injuries.
Both trucks were a complete loss by the time the fire department arrived. When we went by there were no first responders on site. We are amazed at how quickly the fire consumed the two trucks.
This just reinforces our thoughts of driving undistracted with plenty of room in front of us. So when you are driving and see a rather large looking gap in front of a semi, it is there for a reason. No, not for a car to squeeze in, but as a safe stopping gap in order to not end up in a situation such as this.
