Detention – Layover – The Unknown – Waiting…

These are all part of our daily adventures. Each load assignment is a new adventure for us, which is part of this life that we do enjoy. After we have delivered and have an empty trailer there are times where we know what is next up, but there are those times where, for several reasons, we don’t have an assignment right away.

Sometimes we are ‘stuck’ in an area with nothing to do. Other times we are lucky enough to be ‘down’ near friends or family. This is one of the ‘perks’ of driving OTR for us. Facebook has been a wonderful tool over the years to reconnect with friends that we otherwise wouldn’t have stayed in touch with. However, there is nothing quite like being able to reconnect in person. Driving has given us that blessing!

We met Harold before we were a ‘we’! Meaning, we were still a ‘me’. Ok, just because this is probably not normal terminology, let me take a side trip in our story. Raising our boys, we always told them they need to become their ‘me’, out from under us as parents to know who they really were and what they wanted to be before they find a girl, get married to become a ‘we’, and then the two of them need to become a solid ‘we’ before having children and becoming an ‘us’.

Needless to say, it has been awhile since we first met Harold. We were all stationed in Hawaii at Hickam AFB and living in the dorms. Grant and Harold became friends over the love of cars and it continued from there. We made so many memories during our time at Hickam, and like most friendships, didn’t keep in touch after we PCS’d.

Once Facebook came into our lives, we did find each other and reconnect. Harold drove from New Mexico to visit us in Colorado twenty some years ago, which was the last time we have seen each other in person. We have remained in contact and chatted now and again through Facebook.

When we found ourselves down on a layover in Tennessee, we started looking at our options for entertainment. We discovered we were close to Harold!! Yes, once again we get to reap the rewards of OTR!!! It was so awesome to get to spend time with Harold and his awesome wife, Denise! Being able to meet Denise, who we only had seen on Facebook, enjoy some fabulous meals, and a fantastic time shooting pool with two incredible players is absolutely priceless.

It definitely did not seem like it had been so long since our last visit, nor did it seem like it was only the first time we met Denise! It was so cool getting to see a friend that knew us way back when, before we were married, walking down memory lane, catching up with times that have gone by, and still have so much fun with!

Thanks Harold and Denise for such an awesome time!
